Getting Dustless!

The mandatory dust collection and silica dust exposure prevention is now in effect. Contractors are asking for our help in becoming compliant. Are you using your grinder or drill outside or in a confined space? How many hours per day? There are alot of considerations to understand what it will take to be compliant.

How to become compliant? If you do not have a safety engineer on hand that can monitor the particulates in the air, there is some guidance. Osha has a great table and information on particulate exposure. Tool manufacturers like DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, and Michigan Pneumatic have come out with great designs for dustless tool use.

Some of the tools have guards with brush rims, vacuums extraction which includes a vacuum that works with your tool to extract the dust and particulates as they are being created. There are now different vacuum filtered bags for dust disposal and more. Honeywell's respirators have cartridges that will protect your workers from organic, vapor and dust exposure. These different cartridges fit in a half mask and full mask. How do you know what to use? Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a Honeywell Safety Product Facility in Franklin, PA. It was fascinating and reassuring to see the rigorous inspections of their Miller fall protection gear they manufacture. Their exacting testing and measurements was very complex. The fall simulation was both impressive and shocking.

generates a total force of 1225 pounds?

This is why your choice of fall protection gear is so important! The whole factory was filled with people manufacturing harnesses and quality control from testing to inspection. They made sure every harness and accessory was perfect, tested and retested.

Out of 4,251* worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2014, 874 or 20.5% were in construction―that is, one in five worker deaths last  year were in construction. The leading causes of worker deaths on construction sites were falls, followed by electrocution, struck by object, and caught-in/between. These "Fatal Four" were responsible for more than half (58.1%) the construction worker deaths in 2014*, BLS reports. Eliminating the Fatal Four would save 508 workers' lives in America every year.

§  Falls — 349 out of 874 total deaths in construction in CY 2014 (39.9%)

§  Electrocutions — 74 (8.5%)

§  Struck by Object — 73 (8.4%)

§  Caught-in/between — 12 (1.4%)
