Important information about Frostbite and Hypothermia from OSHA is below:
What is hypothermia?
Hypothermia occurs when body heat is lost faster than it can be replaced and the normal body temperature (98.6°F) drops to less than 95°F.  Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F), if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water.
What are the symptoms of hypothermia?
§  Mild symptoms:
o    An exposed worker is alert.
o    He or she may begin to shiver and stomp the feet in order to generate heat.
§  Moderate to Severe symptoms:
o    As the body temperature continues to fall, symptoms will worsen and shivering will stop.
o    The worker may lose coordination and fumble with items in the hand, become confused and disoriented
o    He or she may be unable to walk or stand, pupils become dilated, pulse and breathing become slowed, and loss of consciousness can occur. A person could die if help is not received immediately.
What can be done for a person suffering from hypothermia?
§  Call 911 immediately in an emergency; otherwise seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
§  Move the person to a warm, dry area.
§  Remove wet clothes and replace with dry clothes, cover the body (including the head and neck) with layers of blankets; and with a vapor barrier (e.g. tarp, garbage bag). Do not cover the face.
§  If medical help is more than 30 minutes away:
o    Give warm sweetened drinks if alert (no alcohol), to help increase the body temperature. Never try to give a drink to an unconscious person.
o    Place warm bottles or hot packs in armpits, sides of chest, and groin. Call 911 for additional rewarming instructions.
§  If a person is not breathing or has no pulse:
o    Call 911 for emergency medical assistance immediately.
o    Treat the worker as per instructions for hypothermia, but be very careful and do not try to give an unconscious person fluids.
o    Check him/her for signs of breathing and for a pulse. Check for 60 seconds.
o    If after 60 seconds the affected worker is not breathing and does not have a pulse, trained workers may start rescue breaths for 3 minutes.
o    Recheck for breathing and pulse, check for 60 seconds.
o    If the worker is still not breathing and has no pulse, continue rescue breathing.
o    Only start chest compressions per the direction of the 911 operator or emergency medical services*
o    Reassess patient’s physical status periodically.
*Chest compression are recommended only if the patient will not receive medical care within 3 hours.
What is frostbite?
Frostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing of the skin and underlying tissues. The lower the temperature, the more quickly frostbite will occur. Frostbite typically affects the extremities, particularly the feet and hands. Amputation may be required in severe cases.
What are the symptoms of frostbite?
§  Reddened skin develops gray/white patches.
§  Numbness in the affected part.
§  Feels firm or hard.
§  Blisters may occur in the affected part, in severe cases.
What can be done for a person suffering from frostbite?
§  Follow the recommendations described above for hypothermia.
§  Do not rub the affected area to warm it because this action can cause more damage.
§  Do not apply snow/water. Do not break blisters.
§  Loosely cover and protect the area from contact.
§  Do not try to rewarm the frostbitten area before getting medical help; for example, do not place in warm water. If a frostbitten area is rewarmed and gets frozen again, more tissue damage will occur. It is safer for the frostbitten area to be rewarmed by medical professionals.
§  Give warm sweetened drinks, if the person is alert. Avoid drinks with alcohol.

SAFETY KNOW HOW

Power Tool and Supply sales people like Dave (pictured here in a CLASS 3 safety jacket), help safety professionals every day. They need supplies like hardhats, harnesses, respirators, safety clothing and flame resistant (FR) clothing.  Supplying construction companies with the industrial supplies like power tools and safety equipment needs means we often discuss these three key questions: What type of project or construction site are they working on? What are they doing? What is their concern?
Once we have these three questions answered, it often leads to more information and questions. The key for Power Tool and Supply to be a good supplier for our construction companies and manufacturers is understanding their business, their risks and what tool or equipment will best service them. After talking with a training professional at a local Plumbers Trade School about a plumbing issue, I looked for some helpful DIY tips online. Here are some of the best blogs and videos for helpful DIY Tips!

Vivid eLearning Courses offers a great blog for basic safety handling of hand and power tools.  https://learnatvivid.com/blog/30-tips-for-hand-and-power-tool-safety

I used to read my Dad’s Popular Mechanics as a kid, now I enjoy their online magazine. Here is a great “how to” from them:

Everyone is familiar with eBay and knows someone who has bought or sold online using the eBay platform. One cautionary warning is many knock-offs are found there. Don’t let a great item description fool you. The knock-offs are great imitators on the outside but the proof is in the pudding. The tool will not work as well as the real one and you just threw your money down the drain.
Check out eBay's safety tips. There are a lot of practical tips here:

Think you know everything about safety? Take this quiz to test your knowledge. It may surprise you and if nothing else it will educate you. My Safety Sign offers a great online source for custom or standard work safety signage.

Keeping our workers safe is paramount to Power Tool andSupply. As we train and grow in our own safety knowledge, we hope to always be the resource you choose when purchasing your safety equipment and clothing.  Remember to visit us at 3699 LeHarps Road in Youngstown. We are right off the Meridian Exit on Rt. 680. If you wish a salesperson to visit you at your job site or facility, call us at 330-792-1487 and one of us will stop by!

Master your Disaster with Duct Tape

Did you know Duct Tape came from a mother’s idea? Aren't moms the best!
Vesta Stoudt’s two sons were serving in the military in the 1940’s
and Vesta took a job packing ammunition. The tape being used was
problematic for the soldiers and Vesta took this problem to heart. Her
solution was a cloth tape that was waterproof, originally called DuckTape. Read more about the origins of Duct Tape here. http://www.kilmerhouse.com/2012/06/the-woman-who-invented-duct-tape/.

A moving decision

My son drove by a car in Ohio and sent me the picture of the
duct-taped car you see here.

It got me thinking about all the repairs we use duct tape for. Once a plumber I hired decided to use a margarine lid and duct tape to repair a large sewer pipe in my basement about 15 years ago. It is still holding and saved me $100’s of dollars.

Do you remember when Duct Tape was only one brand, one color, one size? Now we have a variety of colors and brands. Check out our Gorilla Tape and Glue! http://www.gorillatough.com/virtual-tour

I use the Gorilla glue to glue a lot of household items like a broken shelf in the refrigerator, a broken vase and even a light switch cover. Once my border collie had surgery and kept breaking the cone for her head. I got tired of buying new ones and duct-taped the last cone she wore. You should have seen the looks she got when we walked down the street. She was one taped up cone-head dog.

The Gorilla Glue Company is based in Cincinnati Ohio and manufacturers here in the USA! Gorilla tape sticks to rough and uneven surfaces – even brick! But our shelves go far beyond the jungle – we have other duct tape, electrical tape, painters tape, masking tape in different sizes. Think you need to replace it, maybe you just need to tape it! Come visit us and tell us your great tape/glue story! Here is a tip for removing the sticky residue - use a clean cloth, apply W-40 and wipe away!

CONTEST!

The folks at Power Tool and Supply bet you have used duct tape to repair some pretty interesting things. Send your best duct tape work to our Facebook and we will all laugh and learn from your inventive bandage.

FAKES ARE COSTING YOU AND AMERICAN COMPANIES BILLIONS ANNUALLY

FAKES ARE COSTING YOU AND AMERICAN COMPANIES BILLIONS ANNUALLY

TM Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Our consumers’ quest for the cheapest deal is costing American companies billions of dollars, taking away jobs from our American workers and causing injury and loss of time on a job.

Are you buying fakes? If you are bragging about a great online deal you got on your new power drill, impact wrench, or power washer – you may be a victim of a counterfeit product. These shoddy tools are flooding our market, costing our consumers millions in inferior products.
It looks like a Dewalt, has the same label as Ridgid, is in packaging with the same labeling as Milwaukee…  The level of IP, trademark and copyright theft is flawless. You can’t tell the difference until you have the tool or part in your hands. Then the poor engineering shows. It won’t  work, it could blow up and worse injure people. You think, man this tool is a piece of junk and take it to a repair center for DeWalt or Bosch or Stihl only to find out that bargain tool is not what you thought but a fake.

The best way to avoid getting counterfeit tools is buying from authorized distributors. Finding a “deal” on Amazon, eBay or another site may be a dangerous and costly proposition.
If the tool causes injury because it was a fake and not engineered to strict standards like a true DeWalt, Milwaukee, Ridgid, Makita or other brand then you have spent far more than you saved. Eaton has taken prevention a step further by creating a Circuit Breaker Authentication Tool. Using this device will help you determine if it is counterfeit.

Report counterfeits to Stop Fakes, a government agency dedicated to stopping the fakes that are flooding our markets. You are not alone. The Federal government has purchased millions of counterfeit parts. This has spurred regulations to make contractors accountable as to where they are purchasing their parts.

Check out this online video: http://www.stopfakes.gov/consumer-tools https://d12vb6dvkz909q.cloudfront.net/uploads/galleries/342/monty-python-image-1.jpg
This link is to a great resource. The top 10 ways to spot a fake: http://www.stopfakes.gov/sites/default/files/Consumer_Tips.pdf

Billions of dollars in potential sales are stolen from American companies and distributors by counterfeit products. The infringements happen across the world on various platforms. Much of the counterfeit goods flooding the market are from China. These articles will educate you and open your eyes.
http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/counterfeit-goods-make-china-store-31098364

While reviewing a demo video I recorded with our Ridgid representative, in the You Tube feed was a link to a knockoff Ridgid product. Immediately, Tim called the corporate office to report it. We all have to be diligent in making sure our consumers get the right and best product every time they buy from us. We are authorized to sell many of the brands that are being targeted by counterfeit companies from China and will always be sure you are getting the genuine part or tool.

I am not preaching here, I understand wanting a cheap deal. Power Tool and Supply offers the best deal because we carry the true deal – the original brand. Hopefully, this was as eye opening for you as for me. Happy and safe shopping!

Cleveland Ohio Rocks

2016 is an interesting year in politics. Ohio is in the center of it all. With a governor running for President and Cleveland hosting the 2016 Republican convention, it seems to be at the heart of this year’s political engine. Ohio brings a lot to the stage. Our people are hard-working; there are great eateries and amazing food stores. Visit Heinen’s Grocery Store downtown, you will be blown away but the variety of food and the beautiful architecture.
To pull off an influx of 50,000 visitors during the convention requires Northeast Ohio contractors pull together to build new bridges, resurface roads, hotels and other ancillary and infrastructure projects. It is anticipated there will be direct spending of $200 million as a result of the convention, 1200 events around the Northeast associated with the convention will occur and 16,000 rooms have already be contracted by the host committee.
Preparation for this event has been a great boost to our general contractors who build and maintain our infrastructure. Builders, plumbers, electricians, iron workers, steamfitters, masonry workers all are working hard to create a wonderful week for visitors. This week will not only showcase the exceptional arts and entertainment Northeast Ohio has to offer but our hard working general contractors and builders work. As a part of the Ohio Contractors Association, we have watched our fellow members work hard to safely and efficiently meet the deadlines set forth for this convention. ODOT and the city of Cleveland has carefully planned upgrades and infrastructure projects to best help the traffic flow for the convention and in the future for its citizens. I have been to meetings where ODOT shares its vision and planning for new projects and road expansions. I am impressed with how many people have come together to rebuild the region.
Here are some statistics that may rock your world:
·         Cleveland added 4 new hotels in the past year.
·         16,000 hotel rooms have been booked and dorm rooms, homes, apartments are being rented for the week.
·         50,000 visitors will be here for the week.
·         8,000 volunteers are needed
·         $32 Million is being spent on the Public Square redesign. It is a beautiful space!
·         Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – You can rock with Kiss, Pink Floyd, Nirvana and more all in one building!
·         $200 Million should be spent in Northeast Ohio during the convention – cha-ching!

As a nation, we are watching these interesting political times. No matter what side of the fence you sit on, which side you part your hair on, or who you vote for… Americans come together to build a better place, improving roads, bridges and building. In anticipation of all the work our customers are doing Power Tool and Supply added new product lines like concrete sealers, epoxies, grouts from approved ODOT brands like ChemMasters, line striping paint, pavement marking paint to better service our road construction clients. Come visit us at our storefront in Youngstown, we’ll be glad to see you and share a cup of coffee with you!

Becoming A Geek About Concrete

ChemMasters hosted a learning workshop in their factory in February. 2016. I trekked from Pittsburgh where it was a balmy 58 degrees to Madison Ohio at 38 degrees one Sunday afternoon!  Who knew 2 hours north would be 20 degrees colder! It was a bright day and I enjoyed the Ohio farmlands and landscapes as I traveled over bridges sealed with ChemMasters sealants.
The workshop started with a basic understanding of concrete. Concrete is made of three ingredients.  Rock, Sand or Gravel and Portland cement are the first two ingredients. The cement is in a powder form and is the binding agent when mixed with the third most important ingredient – water.  The chemical reaction is called hydration which causes these ingredients to become a paste and gains strength to form rock hard roads, bridges, columns and more as it dries.  We learned about proportions,  water-cement ratio and curing.
There is a curing process that occurs after the concrete has been formed. The curing enables the concrete to continue to strengthen. Did you ever drive under a bridge being worked on and had water like rain falling down on your car? This is the curing process. It enables a strong product that will withstand the weight it needs to and to perform year after year. Did you ever stop to think about the strength of the George Washington Bridge before you drive over it? No, you don’t. We are secure in knowing our bridge contractors are creating and building the bridge to the specifications that give it the strength to ride on top of it year after year.

I learned much about pouring and forming concrete, sealing concrete, how to use grout and the chemistry behind these value added products. We poured concrete, applied sealants and used structural repair mortar like ChemPatch to repair walls.

I added to my vocabulary terms like accelerator, cementitious, crack chasing, delamination and efflorescence. We discussed and watched them mix colors for concrete and discussed stamped concrete, colored concrete, stains, and coatings. I never thought I would find it interesting or fascinating but the scientists at ChemMasters were masters at communicating their passion for creating a high value quality product to enable us to live environmentally sound and convenient lives.

Power Tool and Supply inventories the sealers, epoxies, grouts and more that our general contractors and bridge contractors need. Our products are PennDot and ODot approved. Thanks to the great team at ChemMasters, now my workability talk with our contractors will help them get the right product and cement our relationship.

National Women in Construction Week March 6 – 11, 2016

We observe Women in Construction Week and celebrate those women who's hard work and efforts are helping build this great country.  Both Allegheny County Council and Pittsburgh City Council have proclaimed this to be officially “Women in Construction Week”. The national focus of WIC (Women in Construction) Week is to highlight women as a visible component in the construction industry. It is great to see this vision embraced by Allegheny County and Pittsburgh, PA. Visit www.nawic.org for more information about women in construction.

Women in Construction Week is a celebration of the contributions women make in the construction industry. Less than 3% of workers in the construction field are female. This stereotypically male industry is making room for women. Associations like NAWIC, National Association of Women in Construction are helping spread the word that this industry is a great place for women.

Now on a jobsite you will find women project managers, laborers, carpenters, welders, engineers all working together building and creating new roads, hospitals, schools and more.  The Carpenters Union’s women members are part of Sisters in the Brotherhood which is in Canada and the U.S. The Sisters promote women in construction, help rebuild homes in impoverished areas and help put more women in leadership roles within the industry. https://www.carpenters.org/Archives1/SistersInTheBrotherhood_4-2011.aspx

I attended an ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation)  Conference in Cincinnati March 9th and was pleased to see the initiative Cincinnati has taken in creating the first ever Department of Economic Inclusion, they are being asked by cities from all over the country to share their strategy and structure so other cities can do the same. This department will oversee all economic opportunities within the City of Cincinnati to ensure opportunity for all woman, minority and small businesses seeking to do business with the City are given opportunities. The state of Ohio is one of only
4 states that have laws setting mandatory goals for contracts with minority-owned businesses (15%).

Women are underrepresented in many positions within construction as well as engineering and many of the STEM occupations. By celebrating women, creating opportunities for their companies to grow and allowing equal participation in state and federal contracting opportunities we are enriching our society, economy and families. Let me state, no projects are handed to woman-owned businesses. We still must work hard to provide the best quote and work. With the help of these initiatives we are given a fair opportunity to win work.
